Saturday – January 13th – Revelation 18:17b -----
17) …And all the captains of the merchant ships and their passengers and sailors and crews will stand at a distance.
The Daily Walk Bible inspirational thought for today:
IT IS BETTER TO GO STRAIGHT THAN TO MOVE IN THE BEST OF CIRCLES.*
Good Saturday to you! The weather folks are strongly suggesting that this weekend is a perfect time to break out the long-johns and add another log to the fire. No matter which side of zero our temperatures are at tomorrow morning (Sunday) we will be here to welcome you to worship. This weekend is the second installment of our current series “When Your Way Isn’t Working”. We will be exploring another famous biblical character that tried to do things their way only to discover it to fall short. When they adjusted course, reconnected to the power of God, and trusted in God’s plan they eventually produced abundant fruit for the Kingdom of Heaven. Join us in-building at 8am or 9:45am, or online beginning at 9:45am Sunday.
In the second part of verse seventeen, John now focuses on the plight of the merchants of the sea. In this short verse John summarizes the maritime industry by mentioning four groups that utilized the waters; the sea captain was the pilot of the vessel rather than the owner; the sailors were the ordinary laborers upon the boats; all who traveled by ship were the commercial passengers who paid to transported from one port to another; all who earn their living from the sea is a general classification of people such as commercial fisherman and land-based dock workers. In John’s day thousands of ships crossed the Mediterranean to transport both people and products so the ramifications of a stop to sea traffic, even in the first century would be felt worldwide. When the final Babylon comes to power, it will certainly be supported by an greater global network of sea, air, and land transportation that would far exceed even John’s first century comprehension.
Blessings
