Monday – January 15th – Revelation 18:19     -----

18:9 And they will weep and throw dust on their heads to show their grief. And they will cry out, “How terrible, how terrible for that great city! The shipowners became wealthy by transporting her great wealth on the seas. In a single moment it is all gone.”

The Daily Walk Bible inspirational thought for today:
IT IS POSSIBLE TO LEARN FROM AN ENEMY THINGS WE CAN’T LEARN FROM A FRIEND.*

Happy Monday! Today is not only Monday but the day we celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King, it is also the halfway mark of the month of January. So, let me ask how successful have you been in remembering to write 2024 instead of 2023? Bet you thought I was going to ask how your New Years resolutions were going now that we are two-weeks into the year. No, I am going to wait a couple more weeks when a combination of colder weather and newness wears off to see who is still toeing the line of strong commitment. I am praying for you that whatever you are working on in 2024, you will be both victorious and blessed in your efforts. Go Team!!

In our pick verse today, John concludes the lengthy weeping of those directly affected by the demise of sea commerce. The cry of the mariners follows the earlier three-part pattern set by the kings and merchants. Included in their dirge were a wailing expression of “woes”, a calling out to the great city in hopes of things changing, and then a reference to the “one hour” in which doom fell. Just as the monarchs’ laments were based on their own personal loss of prestige, the merchants’ lament was based on their own loss of goods to sell, so the mariners’ lament is equaled in selfishness to their loss of power. In each case we see the outcome of their demise being based fully on what they lost for themselves. The end of time will expose the reality of the remaining representatives of humanity is only and all about self. The “woes” they express should instead echo back into their own ears.

Blessings
