Sunday – January 10th – Ephesians 4:30

30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Sunday has arrived. As I looked back over the many days, weeks, months, and even years of our Scripture blog, I realized that nearly ten months ago I started identifying the day of the week as part of this opening paragraph. I remember the reasoning was in the early days of the pandemic, when we were under shelter in place recommendations, the once ease of knowing the day of the week seemed at times challenging. For many of us one day seemed just like the next, especially when our normal weekday markers were absent from our routines. With all that being said – today is Sunday and a perfect day to worship God.

We are nearing the end of chapter four and Paul’s teach on putting off the old person we were before we began our relationship with Jesus.  His focus today is centered on our relationship with the third aspect of the Trinity.  We are instructed to live our lives in such a way as to not grieve the Holy Spirit. We are encouraged not to push the Holy Spirit away, to ignore the counsel of the Holy Spirit, or cause the Holy Spirit to grieve by rejecting the Spirit’s wisdom. The Holy Spirit is the continued presence in our everyday life that points to our hope for eternity. For Paul, to be sealed by the Holy Spirit is our best assurance now of the blessings of entrance into Heaven at the end of our earthly life. Jesus told his followers that God was sending a counselor to assist us in transitioning from the life of old to a new life in Him. One of the greatest errors of the human life is to reject the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. As followers of Jesus the Holy Spirit is included in our lives at no extra charge.
