Sunday – January 24th – Ephesians 5:32-33

5:32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Sunday has arrived! May you enjoy your day of rest, relaxation, and opportunity to recharge for the week ahead.

Today we conclude reading and unpacking chapter five of Paul’s letter to the Ephesian Christians. His focus for the last several days has been the Christian relationship between a husband and wife. We have also learned that the same mutual love and respect existing between spouses is the same type of action we should have between members of the body of Christ.  The great mystery Paul speaks about in verse thirty-two is the unity of believers for a common purpose, mission, and goal. This thought is foreign to those raised in the Roman and Greek cultures. It is difficult for us today to understand the radical and counter-cultural ideas Christianity brought to the first century world. In addition to the monotheistic belief that there is only one God, Christianity pushed the envelope to make claims Jesus was the long-awaited Jewish Messiah. Now as people from both Judaism and the Gentile world joined together in this belief the result was a community of faith that needed to operate by a different set of relationship rules. Paul’s description of the husband-and-wife relationship, as well as the other relationship instructions coming in chapter six, would define and separate how believers interacted with other people. What we take for granted today was outside the box action in Paul’s day.
