Tuesday – February 9th – Philippians Introduction

Our Daily Walk Bible thought for today:
WE LIVE BY FAITH, AND FAITH LIVES BY EXERCISE.*

Welcome to Tuesday and what appears to be a week filled with cold temperatures and occasional snow. Well, if we must have winter, I am willing to have it all grouped together in this week and then move on to the next season next week.

Yes, today we begin a new book in the Bible in our Daily Scripture Verse blog. As has become custom with each new book, we begin with an overview that helps set the stage for our daily readings. Philippi was a major trade city on the road to Rome located in the very northeastern part of modern-day Greece. The Daily Walk Study Bible summarizes Paul’s intent and themes as contentment, humility, unity, generosity, and joy.  Philippians is a letter of joy written by Paul from a Roman prison to a church he founded on his second missionary journey (Acts 16). In spite of his circumstances, he encourages the Philippians in the midst of persecution to “always be full of joy in the Lord” (4: 4). Paul himself has much to be thankful for: their financial assistance, the hope of visiting them soon, their steadfast testimony for the gospel. Though that testimony is threatened by divisions, Paul is confident the unity of the Philippian church will be restored as they imitate the humble servanthood of Jesus.*
