Wednesday – February 9th – Philippians 1:1-2
1:1 Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:
2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Today’s Daily Walk Bible inspirational thought:
LIFE IS A LOT LIKE TENNIS— THE GOAL IS TO LEARN TO SERVE BEST.*
Another Wednesday has arrived in what has certainly been here in O’Fallon our winter experience for this season. Cold temperatures and icy/snow conditions remind us that caution is the key word for this week. Yet, the work of the Kingdom of Heaven and the personal growth of each disciple never breaks for snow days.
We begin our journey through Paul’s letter to the believers in Philippi today with his opening remarks. A word often overlooked, especially in what is a patterned Pauline greeting, is “bondservants”. This is a word we typically do not use in our daily twenty-first century language so a little unpacking will serve us well for this verse and the whole of Paul’s letter. Paul and Timothy have given themselves totally to Jesus and have been sent to speak with His authority. Throughout this letter Paul will continually show that Christ is our greatest example of true servanthood. Paul’s use of the word “saints” is an intentional connection of believers to Jesus in reference to their profession of faith and their conduct as holy people of God. It is only through our submission in servanthood that we can be included in this group of saints. This word references a holiness, or the receiving of sanctifying grace, that alone comes from God and not a label we are given by the admiration of others because of our earthly achievements.
Blessings
