Monday – April 5th – Intro to Colossians
Inspirational thought from the Daily Walk Bible for today:
TO HATCH DESPAIR, JUST BROOD OVER YOUR TROUBLES.*
Hello Easter Monday. The scriptures have a handful of stories about post-resurrection interactions with Jesus. For us today the day after Easter is embraced as the beginning of a new life in following Jesus. We have the opportunity to stand in the shadow of the resurrection looking to the unlimited possibilities every day to share with others what we celebrated yesterday.
Today we also begin a new book of the Bible. Paul wrote this letter to the believers in Colosse, a city located in the western area of modern-day Turkey. Paul was in prison in Rome which puts this letter being penned around 61-62 AD. As we read this letter, we will discover that all is not well in Colosse. Although Paul is thankful to hear about the faith of the Colossian believers and their love for all of God’s people, he knows that false teaching threatens. A heresy is growing that promotes empty ritual, useless asceticism, and false mysticism. In order to encourage the Colossians to hold on to the truth, Paul refutes the heresy in a positive way— he shows them who Christ is. Christ as Lord of all gives complete salvation, and he is sufficient for every need. And if Christ is all that matters, then he ought to be present in all we say, do, and think. So, Paul encourages the Colossians to pursue a godly lifestyle befitting those who “have been raised to new life with Christ” (3: 1).
Blessings
