Thursday – May 27th – 1 Thessalonians 1:1       ------
1 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Daily Walk Bible inspirational thought for today:

Hello Thursday. Ouch!!! The inspirational thought today is one that easily produces an ouch response. Sometimes these thoughts are encouraging, motivational, or intriguing, but today’s thought brings about the old saying that it has moved from preaching to meddling. There is really little need to say much about this thought for today, either you understand, and it serves to strongly convict and challenge the way you think/feel/act, or it doesn’t make sense and therefore there are not enough pages in this blog to explain. I know my today can be different as long as I keep this thought front and center.

Today is our opening verse in Paul’s first letter to the believes in Thessalonica. For clarity’s sake, Silvanus mentioned in this verse is the same person as Silas from Acts 15:10. Since this is considered Paul’s first letter this is also the first recorded use of the word “church” in the New Testament. In the Old Testament the whole assembly of Israel was the “church”. In the New Testament “church” could also mean the whole body of believers, but more often applied, as here, to an individual group of Christians who gather for worship in a certain geographical location. In this first letter Paul also sets the precedent of including an identifying phrase about the sovereignty of God. In this Paul emphasizes that the deity of Christ is equal to the deity of the Father. Each title has significance: Lord – deity and sovereignty; Jesus – humanity and savior; Christ – the promised Messiah who was anointed by God. I am always amazed at what God packs into a short verse of scripture that has relevance in our lives today.
