3:6 not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil.
7 Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Hello Tuesday and the completion of the first full week of September. When we lived at the Lake of the Ozarks many years ago, today was the unofficial signal that the lake tourist season was over. The day after Labor Day was a bittersweet moment welcomed by the full-time residents as the opportunity to get their lake back, but also the realization that the much-needed income from tourists was going to be dramatically reduced for the next 8 months. Another predictable phenomenon that occurred on the day after labor was an almost automatic and instantaneous changing of the leaves from summer green to autumn fall. Yes, we have entered a new season of transitions. In fact, we are beginning a journey this week where we are seeking to be awakened from our contentment and be moved by God to do greater things for the Kingdom of Heaven. From my experience the more we hang with God the easier transitions are to handle.
In our pick verses for today Paul continues to outline the qualities for effective and fruitful church leaders. Paul warns the Ephesus not to put a “novice” in the position of leadership. A new person to the faith may fall to the temptation of pride. Pride is the sin that was held against Satan and his punishment was to be cast out of God’s presence. In Christianity today, we don’t often elevate “pride” to the status of a major sin, however it is seen by God as one of the greatest obstacles to trusting and believing in God’s promises and protection. Paul goes on and adds that a competent leader is a person with a good reputation even with non-Christians outside the church. If we have any chance of effectively sharing the Gospel of Jesus our witness to those outside the church must be reflective of a life lived in harmony with the Gospel
