Hello Wednesday! My reading through the Bible in a year has me this week in the book of Matthew. Lots of this New Testament book has “words in red”, which means it quotes the teachings, parables, and instructions from the mouth of Jesus. Also, this book contains some seventy-four references, direct quotes, or illustrations drawn from the Old Testament. Jesus was making the connection of God’s continuous and planned work from before Genesis 1:1 through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, to the last words of Revelation 22. God is never surprised and never reacts to our actions or inactions. The plan of salvation has always been the plan of God from day one.
We begin our new book of 2 Timothy today with what is now accepted as Paul’s standard opening to either the churches or individuals he is writing. It is vital for Paul to remind his readers that everything he teaches is under the authority of God. In fact, his life is ordained by God to be dedicated as an apostle of Jesus to the Gentiles. As Paul writes this letter from his Roman prison, he is certain that the persecution against the followers of Jesus will continue to increase and spread across the entire empire. The greatest weapon against harassment for believers is to live under God’s protection and power. Paul is reminding Timothy to whom he belongs and to the promise God has made on his behalf. Friends, we stand shoulder to shoulder with Timothy and all believers who have called upon the name of Jesus.
