Good Saturday to you! The weekend is here and what may be record high temperatures for today in the greater O’Fallon area. We don’t usually associate October and 90’s in the breath, but here we are with a beautiful weekend before us as a blessing from God. Probably doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to figure out that our inspirational thought comes from scripture reading that speaks into the Easter story. This helps me to remember that we are Easter people 365 days a year. Easter is not celebrated just on one single day in the early spring but is embraced everyday as a reminder of God’s willingness to forgive our sin and remove the penalty of death from our wrap sheet. Join us in worship this weekend as we celebrate Easter in October!
In our pick verses for today, Paul continues to lift up Timothy’s call to ministry by reminding him that God was directly involved in his calling and in his deployment. At Timothy’s ordination, God had imparted to him a gift for ministry. He is encouraged to “stir up”, or “kindle afresh, or “keep in full flame” that spiritual gift from God. Paul then reminds Timothy that because God is involved in both call and sending, he is not to react in a spirit of fear but instead lean on God for power, wisdom, and love. As followers of Jesus who are empowered by the Holy Spirit, we have access to that same power to overcome all difficulties. Through the power of God, we have the ability to love the unlovable and display good judgement in all situations. These attributes will provide the self-control necessary to be fruitful in ministry for the Kingdom of Heaven.
