Good Saturday to you! What a great inspirational thought to start off our weekend. Spending time in prayer is the perfect spiritual exercise for all Christians. And the best thing is that we can do it anytime and anywhere. No need to purchase fancy equipment nor is an expensive membership required. Actually, we are encouraged by Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 to create a spiritual discipline of praying without ceasing. Pray is simply a conversation we have with God – not a one-way monologue, but a two talk and listen activity. And we all know that there is certainly not a shortage of things we can be praying for in our homes, our church, our community, our nation, and our world. Maybe that is why God expects us to always be praying.
In our pick verse today, Paul is beginning the wrap up of his reminder of the importance of staying focused as a fully committed follower of Jesus. If Paul has one theme for the health of a church community is for the leaders to quickly identify false teachings and just as quickly rid the church of those things which could distract a church from fulfilling it’s mission to make disciples. Paul brings up the foolishness in taking a disproportionate amount of time and energy in engaging in dead-end discussions. The squabbles in Crete seemed to center around fanciful interpretations of the Old Testament and speculations about nonessentials which only brought about argument instead of edification. These conversations were considered by Paul to be unprofitable for any Christian. I wonder if in our Christian society today we might be guilty of getting caught up in mindless debates over non-essentials while conversations around non-negotiables are being avoided?
