Thursday – February 3rd – Hebrews 7:1-2     -----

7:1) For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,
2) to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated "king of righteousness," and then also king of Salem, meaning "king of peace,"

The Daily Walk Bible inspirational thought for today:
IF YOU GO AGAINST THE GRAIN OF GOD’S LAW, YOU GET SPLINTERS!*

Hello Thursday!  My prayer is that each of you are safe, sound, and warm today, especially if you live anywhere within the wide area of ice/sleet/snow that began arriving yesterday morning. I am thankful we can stay connected with each other via this daily scripture blog and that we have abundant opportunities to stay in touch with family and friends to check on their well-being. Also, I am extremely thankful for a forecast that is highly favorable for the SunRise parking lot to be cleared and cleaned by late Friday.

In our pick verses today, we open chapter seven by beginning a more in-depth study of the historical figure Melchizedek and his being the most excellent example of a High Priest. In these two verses today, Melchizedek is both introduced by title, and his role within messianic history summarized. He was a priestly leader and king of the area referred to as Salem (known today as Jerusalem). He blessed Abraham and received from him a tithe of Abraham’s victory plunder after defeating Chedorlaomer and the kings allied with him. The meaning of Melchizedek’s name (righteousness) and title (peace) give us a clear picture of God’s call on his life. Righteousness and peace are words used by the prophets to point to the future Messiah’s kingdom. After this brief reference, and confident that he has made God’s point of priestly connection to Jesus, the author of Hebrews makes no further references to the interpretations of Melchizedek’s name and royal title. It is understood that it is what it means both then and now. When we are personally confident that Jesus is the answer there is not further need to belabor the search for other truths.

 Blessings
