Saturday – February 5th – Hebrews 7:4-7 -----
7:4) Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils.
5) And indeed those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to receive tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren, though they have come from the loins of Abraham;
6) but he whose genealogy is not derived from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.
7) Now beyond all contradiction the lesser is blessed by the better.
The Daily Walk Bible inspirational thought for today
THE WONDER OF THE CROSS IS NOT THE BLOOD BUT WHOSE BLOOD.*
Good Saturday to you! Hope this first weekend in February will be filled with opportunities for you to be a blessing to someone as a response to how God has blessed you. Our inspirational thought for today speaks directly into God’s full and complete plan of salvation for humanity. As I am reading through Leviticus, today was about the atonement sacrifice that was an annual practice of the Israelites intended to symbolically represent the removal of the sins of the people. Jesus became for all of us the final sacrifice – the perfect lamb of God whose blood had the power to take away our sin. As I write these words today, I am reminded of the great hymn – “Nothing But The Blood of Jesus. We can hunt after every other avenue that others may suggest lead to self-peace, but for me there is power in the blood of Jesus that nothing else can do for me or for you.
In our pick verses today, we stretched out to include a four-verse set that contains to introduce the important role of Melchizedek in the theological connection to Jesus. The writer of Hebrews lifts up two examples in our reading today of why Melchizedek was greater than even Abraham. When Abraham came before him, Melchizedek received the tithe Abraham offered, he then blessed Abraham. In ancient cultures these two acts would be considered the proper and expected interaction between two people of different rank and status. The author goes on to point out that Melchizedek was greater than the sons of Levi because they received tithes only from their fellows Israelites. But Melchizedek was given tithes by Abraham, the patriarch, the father of the Israelites. As such Melchizedek was great enough in God’s eyes to bless Abraham, who had received God’s special promise of being a father of a great nation. Over the next few days as we move deeper into exploring the connection between Melchizedek and Jesus, we will see how God’s plans are perfect and at times difficult for us mere humans to always comprehend without simply trusting God being God.
Blessings
