A PERSON WHO “KNOWS EVERYTHING” HAS A LOT TO LEARN.*

Happy March 1st to you! Today is the sixtieth day of 2022, the “In like a lamb out like a lion” day, Fat Tuesday, but more importantly it is the opening day of trout season in Missouri state parks. While for some of you the significance of this monumental day could easily good unnoticed, but for devout anglers it signals a rite of passage marking the transition from winter to the first vestiges of spring. At Bennett Springs State Park, my old stomping grounds, thousands of people will, at daylight, be standing in the chilly stream waiting for the whistle to signal the beginning of a new season of trout fishing. This tradition happens regardless of the morning temperatures or the type of moisture falling from the sky. The most impressive of sights comes from the top of the spillway with folks lined across shoulder to shoulder with flyrods in hand waiting for the moment of their first cast of the season – often immediately followed by their first line tangle of the season with the person either to the right or left, or in some case both directions. For those highly curious google “opening day pictures Bennett Springs State Park. While all of this has nothing earth-shattering to do with our faith journey – well unless you seize the opportunity to practice your Christian witness and guard your language as you untangle your line from a new “friend” – I wanted you to be better informed about the day before Ash Wednesday this year. This year SunRise will offer drop in ashes from 7am-8am, and a service of ashes at 7pm.

In our pick verse today our study of Hebrews 9 moves us toward a deeper understanding of the importance and necessity of Jesus’ blood as part of God’s plan of salvation. The sacrificial system of the ancient Hebrews included the killing of animals for certain and specific ceremonially events. One part was that the sacrificial offerings of both animals and grains was a way to support the Levitical priests who did not receive land when the Hebrews settled the promised land. Their role was to take care of the tabernacle and to offer the sacrifices on behalf of the people. Blood was considered the lifeline of an animal or person and thus the shedding of blood was the removal of life. In the annual Atonement ceremony, the blood of a perfect and unblemished lamb was shed to signify God’s forgiveness of the nation’s sins for the past year. The annual Passover celebration centered around the blood of an innocent lamb smeared on the doorway of the homes the Hebrews were residing in the land of Egypt so the angel of death would pass over that house. Jesus, in establishing this new covenant, shed his blood for the forgiveness of our sin and for the angel of eternal death to pass over us so that we would have eternal life. Our salvation is grounded in the blood of Jesus!

Blessings
