Happy Sunday to you, my friends! We have arrived at the Sunday before Easter which marks the beginning of Holy Week. This is always such a whirlwind of a week in scripture as all four of the Gospels record the numerous and non-stop events occurring between Palm Sunday and Easter morning. They are not all exact in every little detail, but all contain the important highlights that pull together our understanding of Jesus’ passion and His love for humanity. The depths of God’s love for us is on full display during this last week of Jesus’ earthly life. I would strongly encourage you to spend a little extra time this week in reading the four accounts of the Holy Week. The power of these stories only intensifies the victory celebration of an empty tomb next Sunday.
In our pick verse today the author of Hebrews adds to the list of faith-filled Old Testament saints the name of Rahab. What a great reminder that great faith can be found in anyone who is willing to trust God in the most difficult situations of life. Rahab was not even Hebrew, but instead a woman of the city of Jericho whose reputation and standing in the community was considered less than honorable. Yet, God used her to help spare the lives of the Hebrew spies who were scouting out the city of Jericho. Because of her assistance, God in turn spared her and her family when Joshua’s forces entered the city. Rahab’s faith that God would fulfil His promise kept her, at a risk of her own life, from turning in the spies to the city leaders. Such a seemingly simple act of faith has landed her in the Hebrews chapter 11 hall of fame.
