Happy, healthy, and blessed Sunday to you today. What a great day to spend time giving thanks to God for all the blessings in your life. Today is the second installment of our current teaching series at SunRise – “Who We Are”. If you are curious who we are at SunRise the best way to explain it is that each of us as individuals come together to be the church alive and active in the communities in which we live. Over these past few years SunRise remained strong, vital, and engaged without fully relying on a building as our means of focus. We experienced the truth of those familiar hymn lyrics – the church is not the building…, the church is the people. This weekend our emphasis is on “Be Who We Are” as seen through the example of Jesus’ interaction with others. This is also Family Worship Sunday with all the sights, sounds, and joys of families coming together to celebrate our relationships with God. Join us in building at 8am or 9:45am, or livestream online at 9:45am. And if you are reading this after any of those time then on-demand options are always available on the SunRise YouTube channel.

Today’s pick verse kicks off our exploration of the New Testament book of James. The opening words help us to identify not only the author of the book, but his understanding of his role and relationship with Jesus. These seemingly humble and transparent words of servanthood will set the tone for the entirety of this book. James is convicted that the true role of a follower of Jesus is to be a representative of the Kingdom of Heaven and a servant to others, both other believers and those who have not yet made the decision to follow Jesus. Even though James is positioned as the head of the Christian movement in Jerusalem, his intention is to write a letter to all believers, both Jewish converts and gentiles, scattered throughout the Roman Empire. James’ forthcoming instructions for practical living as a believer cannot confined to a geographical location or a calendar date but contains timeless relevancies for all who follow Jesus. As we read this book may we be constantly reminded it is not a study of history but an everyday handbook on being a fully devoted follower of Jesus.

Blessings
  Pastor Jim
