3:5)   Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!

Good Saturday to you!  Yes, another weekend is in full swing for us to enjoy. At SunRise the focus is on week number three of our current series – “Thank You For Being A Friend”. So far, we have explored the importance of being a friend of Jesus and the opportunity to be a friend to strangers. This weekend we will discover how we can be a friend to believers. As a believer each of us are connected to other believers through our relationship with Jesus. When we come together as friends, we can accomplish great things for the Kingdom of Heaven. When believers struggle with working together, we create an opportunity for the evil one to disrupt our personal spiritual growth and derail the growing the population of the kingdom.  Join us on Sunday either in-building or online to strengthen your friendship with other believers.

In our pick verse today, James draws from the previous illustrations of a horse’s bit and a ship’s rudder to now show the power the tongue has to control us. James is using the tongue as the metaphor for the thoughts we form in our heads that can transition into words that exit our bodies through our mouths. While James gives no specifics in this verse, he obviously has in mind a person’s natural inclination to boast, to be self-centered, and to have an overly inflated self-image that is easily shared to others. Whenever and however the tongue boasts, it will always leave a wake of destruction. It can tear down others, it has the power to destroy families, marriages, personal relations, and even the church. Instead of giving into the temptations of self-centered words, we should speak only gracious and kind words, words that build each other up rather than tear down. Such words can only come from a heart that is both filled with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and that is wholly submitted to the Spirit’s direction.

Blessings
