Wednesday – July 13th – James 3:11-12     -----

3:11)    Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening?
    12) Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both saltwater and fresh.

The Daily Walk Bible inspirational thought for today:
PEOPLE USED TO ARGUE AS TO WHETHER THE WORLD WAS SQUARE OR ROUND— BUT THE BIBLE SAYS IT IS CROOKED!*

A happy and healthy welcome to Wednesday. Hope your week has already been filled with blessings from God and with opportunities to serve God. Our inspirational through for today, while a little humorous on the surface, reminds us that we live in a world that operates in direct opposition to the word, way, and will of God. The evil one is constantly tempting folks to ignore the Bible and instead just allow people to do whatever they think is right in their own eyes. If you need proof positive that we humans are incapable of figuring things out on our own, then read the last few chapters of the book of Judges in the Old Testament. The book opens and closes with the statement that in those days there were no kings and people did what was right in their own eyes. 99.99% of the time what is right in our eyes is unacceptable in the eyes of God. We can do better if we allow God to lead us through the power of the Holy Spirit.

In our pick verses today, James uses everyday illustrations to drive home his point that the human tongue is the greatest hindrance in human relationships. James has already established the reality that all of our words spring from our inward character and that we must allow the Holy Spirit to cleanse our heart if we are to ever control our tongue. In today’s verses James teaches that a double-talking tongue is as incompatible in a Christian as a fresh and saltwater spring existing together in nature. Likewise, he asks, can a tree produce fruit different then the root and bark that identifies it? The impossibilities of either of these bizarre events occurring in nature is the same as a person sincerely praising and cursing from the same tongue. It is either one or the other, but not both. The evil one works hard to present opportunities for us to cultivate a nature that is against the word, will, and way of God. The Holy Spirit can help us root out the evil nature that can so easily reside inside us. The choice of who we serve is entirely up to us? Joshua challenged the people of his day – chose this day whom you will serve, but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.

Blessings
