Friday – October 21st – 1 Peter 5:1     -----

5:1) And now, a word to you who are elders in the churches. I, too, am an elder and a witness to the sufferings of Christ. And I, too, will share in his glory when he is revealed to the whole world. As a fellow elder, I appeal to you:

Hello Friday! I saw a post on social media the other day that was intended to joyously remind folks that there are only 10 more Saturdays until Christmas Eve. While for you that may seem still a lifetime away, I do want to take a moment to spark you into a pre-Christmas spirit. Our annual Christmas Shoebox collection has already started with a turn-in date over the next couple of weeks. This year volunteers at Sever Saturday will be assembling the shoeboxes (you can also sign up for that activity), so we need folks to bring in items well before that date. The “Events” page on both the website and SunRise App has the complete list of items we are collecting.  If you would like to assist in the expense of shipping ($10) you can access the “giving” link on either the website or app, then click on “missions” and choose Christmas Shoebox from the dropdown menu. Thanks in advance for bring Christmas to a child!

In our pick verse today, Peter introduces this closing chapter by giving instructions to both church leaders and church members in the first century. While a couple of thousand years have passed since Peter wrote these words the foundational aspects remain relevant for all believers. The elders are the first century term used to identify those who have spiritual and pastoral responsibility in the church. Although he was an apostle, Peter also identified with the role and responsibility of all church leaders. Each have the responsibility to care for God’ people and help them grow in their faith. Peter, along with James and John, had caught a pre-glimpse of the glory of the resurrected Jesus at the Transfiguration, a glory to be revealed to all believers when Jesus returns at the end of the ages. One we will experience because we have placed our lives into the hands of the one who first breathed life into us.

Blessings
