5:5) In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Welcome to Monday and the last day of October 2022. Yes, today is the eve of what is traditionally known in Christianity as All Saints Day on November 1st. Since around 1840 the US has tagged today as Halloween. The origin of this annual fall festival has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (a Gaelic word pronounced “SAH-win”), a pagan religious celebration to welcome the harvest at the end of summer, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In contrast to the warding off of ghosts and/or evil spirits/zombies/etc., those who believe in Jesus can, as our inspirational thought for today emphasizes, put our faith in trust in the only one who was, is, or will be fully human and fully divine – God and man at the same time. No evil spirit can stand against the power of Jesus. And we are on His side!
In our pick verse today Peter transitions from instructions for the church leaders to now sharing instructions for the church member. He begins by stating that all believers should be submissive to God and allow themselves to be under the authority and accountability to leaders and elders. In contrast to the word “elder” used in verse one of this chapter, this usage refers to those who are both older in their years and mature in their faith. Mutual submission and concern for the interest of others is the essence of Christian love. It is important to note that a believer can only live into this verse when leaders have humbly submitted themselves to the instructions from Peter in the first four verses of this chapter. Working together to populate the Kingdom of Heaven is a thing of beauty and, yes, it will be viewed as revolutionary by the world today.
