Wednesday – March 8th – 3 John 1:7-8 ------
1:7) because they went forth for His name's sake, taking nothing from the Gentiles.
8) We therefore ought to receive such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth.
The Daily Walk Bible inspirational thought for today:
WHEN SIN IS FASHIONABLE, CHRISTIANS SHOULD BE OUT OF FASHION.*
Howdy to Wednesday! Our inspirational thought is worth spending a few moments to consider its message and how it plays out in our lives. There are many things today that are fashionable, faddish, or popular in our society. These things demand our attention and our loyalty, if not our money to survive. History tells us that everything has a shelf life, a predictable pattern that flourishes and then fades. Many of these great opportunities of a lifetime are simply temptations wrapped in pretty packages. As a follower of Jesus, we have the best that Heaven can offer, and a promise from God that never fads or fails. When sin rears its head, no matter how appealing, and everyone is chasing after it, we are to be intentionally out of fashion.
In our pick verses today, John expands on the “strangers” mentioned in verse five. These missionaries had gone out into the world for the sake of Jesus’ name, not for personal gain or fame. They took nothing in the way of support from the unconverted Gentiles to whom they preached lest they be accused of preaching for money as the pagan philosophers did. Thus, Christians were encouraged to receive them with open hospitality. In this way all the church shared in the work (responsibility, joy, and results) of the missionaries in fulfilling the Great Commission. To be a fully committed follower of Jesus, there are God stated expectations and obligations on our part. Christianity is far from being a free ride on the coattails of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. We should joyfully serve God out of thanksgiving for what He has done on our behalf.
Blessings
