Hello Friday! The front edge of another weekend has arrived for us to enjoy. As we wrap up this week of life, work, and ministry I am sure many of you might be teetering on the edge of physical and emotional exhaustion. If your household is like ours, the month of May seems to be an exercise in navigating a full calendar of activities. School events, sporting events, social events, concerts, meetings, yard work, and whatever else you might add, keeps all of us in a constant state of motion. As you read the blog today, take a moment from the busyness of your life – pause and slowly count to twenty and then given God thanks for your breath, your heartbeat, and your sanity. Have a great day!

In our pick verse today, Jesus now moves to the sixth of the seven churches in Revelation. The city of Philadelphia was located on the Cogamus River in central Turkey, about 105 miles east of Smyrna and 25 miles southeast of Sardis. The region around Philadelphia was known for its many earthquakes which over the course of history had taken their toll on the city, requiring it to be rebuilt more than once. Despite the repetitive earthquakes, the city was noted for the magnificence and splendor of its temples and other public buildings, garnering it the nickname “Little Athens”. Most notable about Philadelphia is the meaning of the name itself – “brotherly love”. Its name was given to it in honor of Attalus II, because of his loyalty to this elder brother, Eumenes II, King of Lydia. There is a long-held belief that the name of a city often becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy for the residents. As we explore the letter to the believers in Philadelphia, we will see how the history of this city shapes the believers within the church.

Blessings
