12:15) So the serpent spewed water out of his mouth like a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away by the flood.
16) But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon had spewed out of his mouth.

Good Sunday to you! Our inspirational thought for today introduces the opening of the New Testament in the Daily Walk Bible reading program. For the remainder of 2023 our readings will take us through the entire New Testament. The inspirational thought is appropriate for us to begin this part of the story of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. When we are hungry for God’s word to be a part of our discipleship diet than we will be filled with what God desires for us in this life. In our pick verses today, John continues recording his vision of the battle between the dragon and the church. The dragon’s attack on the women - now described as a huge single-headed serpent – is portrayed spewing river of water. At various times in the Old Testament writings, water and flood images are often cast as great evils against humanity. If this demonic threat came from the dragon’s mouth, then the woman’s help comes in dramatic fashion from the earth itself, which was opened its mouth and swallowed up the raging river. Once again, John’s readers are comforted in knowing that God’s protection of His people from the devil will be as extensive as necessary. It is not too difficult to see in these verses that God will even use the forces of nature on behalf of His people when the opportunity arises.
