17:7) Then the angel said to me: “Why are you astonished? I will explain to you the mystery of the woman and of the beast she rides, which has the seven heads and ten horns.

Good Wednesday to you! Just like our Monday thought for the day was perfect to start the week, our Wednesday thought is a great one for our mid-week check in. Witnessing was an expectation for every member of the early church. Their lives had been so transformed from their previous backgrounds that to many people their actions seemed odd and out of place in their society. If we are honest our lives as a fully committed follower of Jesus ought to also look abnormal to the characteristics of our culture and society. If God didn’t exist would your life look different to someone else?
In our pick verse today, John’s vision of the whore on the red beast is soon to interrupted by his angel escort. Verse six concludes with John viewing in amazement at the scene he observes. The angel addresses this amazement by reminding him that he had promised to show him a sight beyond human imagination, that would also include understanding. One think John was certain of at this point is that the great prostitute was not meant to be representative of Rome or any know city of his day. While there was multiple incidents of persecution of Christians throughout the first century, and while it would have been easy to equate the visionary Babylon as Rome, the historical facts do not support a wholesale slaughter of Christians as indicated in this vision. John knew that what he was seeing must point beyond anything happening in his own time. I think we could all agree that it surpasses anything we are experiencing in the world today. The worst for humanity at the hands of the devil is yet to come.
