Happy Saturday and happy first weekend in 2024. This weekend is also the beginning of a new sermon series at SunRise. We are kicking off the year with a six-week series that will focus on “When Your Way Isn’t Working”. For many folks, if they are honest, life doesn’t always go the way we plan, hope, or wish. Often the plans of humans are based more on the enticements of this world, and not as much on the riches of eternity. Each week we will be working to find our purpose and contentment through a deeper connection with Jesus. This is a great series to invite someone you might know that would say their way isn’t working. In-building worship is at 8am and 9:45am. Online worship starts and 9:45am and is followed by on-demand options on our SunRise Church YouTube channel.
In our pick verse today, John continues recording the events on earth as they near their climax. The first mourners at the death the harlot queen/Babylon/sins of civilization are the power brokers of earth. They were seduced into following her and as such committed adultery with her. In terms of the final kingdom of the Antichrist, this means that they joined in the false religion and heretical religious teachings of their day. Powerful people, more than any others, have access to the luxurious material comforts and sensual pleasures afforded them by their status and position in society. When they see the smoke of her burning, they will realize that the time of extravagance has ended for them as well. They have existed under the false pretense that evil would triumph over good. That is a bad bet to make.
