In our pick verse today, we begin the twentieth chapter of the book of Revelation. This is also the last chapter that records the fate of Satan and his allies. The final two chapters of the book, twenty-one and twenty-two describe the beauty of an existence without evil, death, or suffering. But we have fifteen verses of God’s judgment before we get there. The same angel John met in 9:1-2 holding the keys to the Abyss, reappears in today’s verse holding those same keys to the bottomless pit along with a great chain. The chain is purely symbolic in nature – as if a “chain” could begin to hold the devil, a spirit being. Most biblical scholars agree that the chain represents God’s power to defeat the devil.
