Tuesday – January 19th – Ephesians 5:18-21

18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.

Welcome to Tuesday!  If you are keeping track you know that today marks the tenth month that SunRise has been in major adjustment mode as a result of the COVID pandemic. Ministries have been modified and missions have been redirected during this time. While things certainly have been very different for all of us, SunRise has continued to find ways to live into its mission and vision of bring the message of Jesus to as many people as possible. In case you are curious serious discussions are in process as to what and when next steps are possible for additional in-building activity. This information will be passed along as soon as decisions are made.

Paul concludes this sub-section of walking in the light of God with a handful of both cautions and encouragements for all believers. Paul’s cautions include a warning to not overindulge in wine to the point of being intoxicated. By contrast, a life lived in the light and spirit of God leads to self-control, joyful worship of God, and the mutual submission of Christians to one another. While Paul doesn’t come out and say it here (wait for chapter six), but certainly implies in these verses that walking in the light of Jesus requires us to understand the evil one will do all in his power to tempt us to abandon that which God desires of us as a follower of Jesus. Imagine a life with no self-control, joyless or absent worship of God, and blatantly asserting power over others. God promises to provide us the pattern to follow and the power of the Holy Spirit to assist us, but the bottom line is that we have the choice between which path we will pursue.
