Monday – January 24th – Ephesians 6:1-3

6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
2 "Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with promise:
3 "that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth."

Today begins a new week in service to the Lord. We also begin a new, and the final, chapter in Paul’s letter to the believers in Ephesus. Toward the end of this chapter are some of my favorite verses in the entire Bible, but we have a few days before we get to them.

Today in our pick verses we shift from the relationship between husband and wife to now expectations for Christian relationships with others. Children are the topic of today’s subject. The role of Christian children, regardless of age, is to show mutual respect and love for their parents. Paul strengthens his requirement for this relationship by stating we are to “obey”. Of course, common sense is that obedience is based on things that are lawful as a Christian, as well as those things that are not harmful or unhealthy. We realize, as did Paul, that not every parent – child relationship stands on the best ground, yet as a follower of Christ we are to respond to life challenges and struggles in ways different than the world. Much like the husband/wife relationship, in the first century Roman world the relationship between parent and child was not based in Christ-like love. To follow Jesus has always meant drastic challenges to our natural inclinations of putting self-first.
