5:12) But most of all, my brothers and sisters, never take an oath, by heaven or earth or anything else. Just say a simple yes or no, so that you will not sin and be condemned.

Happy and blessed Sunday to you! Our day for corporate worship has arrived and I pray you seize the opportunity to surround yourself with the presence of God and in a gathering of believers. Our inspirational thought for today is one that may take an extra moment to soak in. Many of us can readily admit to our perceived lack of patience and even joke that when we pray for patience we expect to happen immediately. The reality is that patience does not come easy to anyone. We all want to either fix what ails us, or rush to a solution so we can move on to the next chapter in our life. How many of us have used the phrase “I can’t wait until……”? The second half of this inspirational thought is where the action is revealed. When we are able to live with peaceful patience the result produced is often greater than what we expected, anticipated, or even imagined.
In our pick verse today, James shares some practical wisdom on how we are to live our lives as faithful and faith-filled followers of Jesus. Human interactions are unavoidable and will often set the tone of how others perceived both our commitment to Christ and even what Christianity is all about. We are to be careful that we live in a way that always points to the glory of God. We are instructed by James to not swear – in the biblical sense we are forbidden to use an oath in casual conversation to convince others of our integrity. Such usage is disrespectful of God’s name. Our word should be so above reproach that others will accept it without our needing to tag it with “I swear…”. What a great challenge for us to watch what we say and see how it speaks to our integrity as a follower of Jesus.
