1) Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him.

Welcome to Monday! I am fully aware that the groundhog saw his shadow last Thursday which according to folklore, we will experience six more weeks of winter weather. I would rather gauge the distance to the warmth of spring by knowing we are less than a month away for Upward Soccer kicking off at SunRise. If you have a kindergartener through sixth grader than SunRise Upward Soccer is perfect for your early spring outdoor activities. Signups are open right now and can be accessed from either the SunRise website or the SunRise app by clicking on the “events” link and then scroll to the Upward Soccer graphic. Evaluations will be held on March 4th and 5th. All games will be played on Saturday mornings and early afternoons.
In our pick verse today, John begins a new teaching section in this fifth chapter. For the next seventeen verses John will draw the connection between being a follower of Jesus and receiving the gift of life. The person who is born of God has an abiding faith in Jesus as the Son of God. Every believer first loves God and then the natural flow is to other believers. Through believing in Jesus, we are born again of God – think of Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus in the third chapter of John’s gospel. It is a right thing that we should love God, our Father in Heaven, and our brothers and sisters who have also been born again into the spirit of God. John is going to great lengths to remind first century believers of the importance of being a living example of God’s love. He knows that the false teachers and the critics of Christianity will do all they can to try and expose any discrepancy between word and deed. Christians today have the same challenge – folks want to discredit our witness by questioning our commitment to God’s word.
