IDOLATRY IS ANYTHING THAT COOLS YOUR DESIRE FOR CHRIST.*
Happy Ash Wednesday to you!! Our inspirational thought for today is a great definition of what is an idol. Many times, people desire the aid of some standardized checklist of what constitutes idol worship in our modern times. The trouble with putting all of our stock in lists, is that the devil will immediately throw a non-list item at us to idolize. And in our human nature we will not see it for what it is since it is not on the official idol “list”. We also must take into account that what is an idol for me may not be on your radar at all. Idol worship is personalized to who we are and the moment in which we are living. As we begin the season of lent today, now would be a great time to put away idols that cool our desire for more Jesus.
In our pick verses today, John continues his introduction to his second letter to first century believers. John wants to reassure his readers of God’s grace, mercy, and peace that is available to all believers as a gift from God. Because of the truth of Jesus’ finished work on the cross and His abiding presence in our lives, we can be fully confident of receiving all of God’s promised grace, mercy, and peace. In verse three, John identifies two distinctive themes for this letter: 1) the truth about who and what Jesus is to humanity and 2) the necessity of our expressing God’s love to others. Because of the briefness of this letter John will waste no time making those two points over the next ten verses.
