OBEDIENCE SHEDS LIGHT ON THE HIDDEN THINGS OF GOD.*
Hello Friday! What a great inspirational thought for us to ponder today. The goal of a follower of Jesus is to be obedient in and through every aspect of our lives. The devil constantly provides temptations for us to consider as a choice that would appear to make us happier, or complete, or rewarded, or justified, or …. (you fill in the blank). We can always be assured that anything from the devil requires from us an act of disobedience – our outright rebellion against God’s word, God’s way, God’s will, and God’s when. We are blessed because God has given each of us the ability to choose between obedience and disobedience, choose between blessings and curses, between Heaven and Hell. What choice might you make today when the devil comes knocking?
In our pick verse today, we transition to the second of the seven churches of Revelation. Smyrna was located north of Ephesus along the coast in what is modern day Turkey. The city itself is most noted for housing a temple dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena. It was a town that was highly devoted to Rome and the worship of the emperor as the supreme god over all things. The believers in Smyrna may have submitted to the civil laws of Rome, but they refused to worship or offer sacrifices to the emperor. The outright refusal by the first century believers to worship the emperor brought about intense persecution from Rome authorities. Despite these ongoing challenges, Jesus, the One who overcame death, offers eternal life to those who may face death for His sake.
