In our pick verse today, John begins recording the final letter of Jesus in Revelation to the believers in the city of Laodicea. The biblical city of Laodicea was a wealthy city during the Roman period. Not only was Laodicea located on major trade routes that connected it to important cities like Ephesus, Smyrna, and Sardis, it was also a center of textile production and banking. Perhaps not surprisingly, the church of Laodicea is noted in this letters as being wealthy city. Additionally, Laodicea was located just six miles down the road from the famed Hierapolis hot springs, as well as six miles away in the other direction from the crisp fresh cold water of rivers that feed the agricultural valley all around Laodicea. Ironically the richest city in the area had no fresh drinking water supply readily available to them.
