Welcome to Monday! A big event is coming up on Wednesday of this week. The August New Member class will be held on Wednesday August 9th beginning at 6:30pm. In our pick verse today, John concludes the vivid description of the deadly locust descended upon the earth. The leader of this swarm of locust is neither the holy angel of God with the key nor Satan, who will be introduced in chapter twelve. This is some other type of archdemon that appears here and again in 11:7. An important note about “angels” in the book of Revelation is that the title is also applied to evil supernatural beings as well as the good angels sent by God from the Kingdom of Heaven. The title Apollyon is John’s usage of the Greek word that is translation of our word “destruction”. Additionally, John may also be calling out the demonic nature of the highly admired Greek god Apollo. We are best to remember that any god other than the one true God is an enemy of the Kingdom of Heaven. Yes, we all probably studied Greek Mythology in high school, but it is just that - “mythology”. When we begin mixing in any type of mythology into Christianity, we are crossing a dangerous line into idolatry. Check out the readings in Jerimiah if you need a reminder of God’s view on idol worship.
