In our pick verse today, John continues to describe the horrific monster that has appeared before him. This beast from the sea is best understood as the Antichrist, Satan’s counterpart to the true Christ. John’s description of its body in the previous two verses are representative of the Antichrist’s political power over the world. Of course, in this vision the dragon is Satan. Just as Christ shares God’s throne of eternal glory, so the Antichrist shares Satan’s throne of eternal damnation. By appearing to be mortally wounded and then healed, the Antichrist tries to duplicate Christ’s resurrection. This is a prime example of the deception Satan uses to trick folks into following him and turning away from Jesus.
